Community Service Com.: Yu’s lack of policy skills, ideas won’t be productive for community service

  Suzanne Yu

Suzanne Yu, who is running unopposed for the office of community
service commissioner, may indeed have the experience to effectively
direct the 20-plus projects in her commission ““ but her lack
of policy skills are a major concern.

Yu will no doubt be a dedicated and hard-working commissioner
next year. Her top three goals are increasing programming budgets,
initiating outreach efforts, and strengthening the commission
internally. However, she lacks concrete ideas on how to expand
outreach efforts and didn’t provide any specific plans on how
to strengthen her commission if elected.

Yu’s greatest weakness is her naive take on policy issues.
As a voting member on council next year, she plans to vote in
support of issues which favor her own commission. Because of these
mercenary tactics, Yu may wind up compromising student interests on
important non-community service issues.

While Yu will make every effort to maintain and expand the
programs under her commission, her lack of interest in dealing with
larger policy issues makes her a potential threat to students. Yu
better remember her responsibility to serve her community in
office.
