With freshman Yvonne Choe currently tied for first place
individually, the No. 16 UCLA women’s golf team has taken a
comfortable position in fifth place after the first day of golf at
the Pac-10 Championships held in Walla Walla, Wash.

With a team score of 301, 13 over par, the originally seeded
sixth Bruins are currently trailing Arizona, which has taken a
commanding first place lead at five-over par, 293, followed by USC
at .297, Cal at 299, and Stanford at 300.

Individually, Choe is tied with USC’s Mikaela Parmlid at
71.

Surprisingly, No. 1 Lorena Ochoa of Arizona, who has captured
first place in seven straight tournaments this year, is currently
tied for third place with ASU’s Jimin Kang at even par
72.

In other Bruin scores, sophomore Gina Umeck is tied for 16th at
76, sophomore Melissa Martin and freshman Charlotte Mayorkas are
tied for 25th at 77 and senior Alicia Um is tied for 32nd at
79.

Last year UCLA placed seventh in the Pac-10, only to go onto the
NCAA West Regionals to place third. The Bruins proceeded to make
their presence known at the NCAA Finals, where they finished tied
for fifth with Oklahoma State at 253.

The second round of Pac-10 action continues tomorrow.
