As the 1500 meter run progressed, it became a cutthroat
three-man race. UCLA’s Bryan Green was slightly ahead of
advancing teammate Andrew Wulf, as both were jockeying for position
against a BYU opponent.

“I said, “˜you’re not passing me,’ and he
(Wulf) elbows me right in the chest,” said Green.

Green emerged victorious 3:51.05 after the start of the race,
one second off his personal record, in a narrow victory. The 1500
was one of 12 events won by the men’s track and field team
Saturday at Drake Stadium, as the Bruins won handily over No. 22
Brigham Young University and Cal State Northridge.

The Bruins won both in triangular scoring (173, BYU 97, CSUN 94)
and dual scoring (118-63 over BYU and 123-63 over CSUN, and have a
chance to re-enter the national rankings after dropping out of the
top 25 last week.

Junior runner Justin Patananan, senior thrower Scott Moser and
senior sprinter Michael Lipscomb each took two individual titles
for the Bruins.

Patananan took a close two-man race in the 3000-meter
steeplechase (9:13.29) and later won the 5000-meter run
(15:13.00).

“I wanted to pass with two laps to go, but (the BYU
opponent) was pushing the pace a little bit,” Patananan said
about the duel.

“He wasn’t jumping the water barriers that strong,
so I decided to go after the second-to-last water barrier, with
about 500 (meters) to go.”

Moser posted a season-best, automatic qualifying mark of 199-6
to win the discus, and to his surprise, also took a title in hammer
throw at 201-1.

“My arms weren’t as loose as I would like them to
be,” he said. “Considering how bad it felt, it went
farther than I expected it to.”

Lipscomb placed first in the 100- (10.55) and 200-meter dashes
(21.15) and ran the opening leg for the victorious 4×400-meter
relay team (in a season low time of 3:07.75).

Ryan and junior Kyle Erickson captured both hurdle events for
the Bruin men: Ryan ran the 110 in 13.80, and Erickson ran the 400
in 50.37, a personal record and NCAA provisional qualifying
time.

Other event winners were sophomores Dan Ames in the shot put
(62-8), Juane Armon in the long jump (24-11 3/4) and Tony Ortiz in
the triple jump (47-8).

The Bruins will be in Walnut, Calif., next weekend for the Mt.
SAC relays and return home May 4 for the annual crosstown showdown
against USC.
