DANIEL WONG/Daily Bruin Senior Staff Though senior
Amanda Freed is hitting .361 for the season, she
went 1-for-7 at Washington and allowed five runs from the circle on
Saturday.
Bags Pac-ked for conference games
Spring break saw the end of the pre-Pac-10 schedule with a
doubleheader sweep of Fresno State on March 25. It also marked the
last game at Easton Stadium for almost three weeks, as UCLA (33-4,
1-1 Pac-10) traveled to Washington for two games last week and will
go to Arizona for three more this weekend. The Bruins next play at
home again April 12 against Stanford.
The first game at Washington was a 2-0 pitchers duel between
sophomores Keira Goerl and Tia Bollinger, the Huskies’
ace.
Last year as freshmen, the two threw over 200 pitches in a
15-inning 5-4 affair at Easton. Goerl allowed only one hit, two
walks and struck out six on Friday en route to the shutout
victory.
Saturday’s did not go as smoothly. Bruin senior hurler
Amanda Freed, bothered by nagging injuries, including one to her
right forearm, allowed six hits and five walks in five innings of
work.
“Amanda had been pretty beat up going into Pac-10,”
UCLA head coach Sue Enquist said. “I have so much confidence
in Amanda and her ability. So when she’s 100 percent, I
believe she’s one of the best pitchers in the country. But I
also know that she’s still healing and you have to factor
that in.
“It’s not an excuse, just a reality.”
Freed left the game with a 6-5 lead, but Goerl walked the
leadoff batter and three errors helped Washington (30-9, 1-1) take
a 9-6 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Bollinger pitched three
scoreless innings in relief for the win.
“What happened up in Washington is indicative of what this
team has done in the pre-Pac-10,” Enquist said. “It
didn’t shock me at all because I knew if they continued to be
inconsistent defensively it would catch up to them.”
No. 1 vs. No. 2 on TV this Saturday
Saturday’s game between top-ranked UCLA and No. 2 Arizona
(33-4, 2-0) will be televised on Fox Sports Net, and the players
are very well aware of that fact.
“They know,” Enquist said. “I can sit here all
day and talk about how all the games matter, but everybody knows
Saturday is a TV game.”
The game will be a rematch of last year’s Women’s
College World Series title game, where Wildcat ace Jenny Finch shut
out the Bruins 1-0. It is scheduled for a 1 p.m. PST start.
Nuveman six HR from NCAA record
In the 9-6 loss to Washington, UCLA senior catcher Stacey
Nuveman hit her ninth home run of the season and 79th of her
career. She is six shy of tying the NCAA mark with 19 regular
season games still left.
