Polo class set to saddle up for April intro

The sport of kings will soon become a sport of Bruins. Having
been added to the spring quarter slate of recreational sports
classes, UCLA will introduce polo to the campus in April.

Several other California schools ““ USC, Stanford, UC Davis
and UC Santa Barbara ““ have already formed competitive polo
squads. Organizers at the California Polo Club hope the
recreational class is the first step on the road to intercollegiate
competition.

Christina Berger, currently on staff at the UCLA Medical School
and formerly on the cover of the March 2001 issue of Polo Magazine,
will teach the class.

“I think it would be great for polo and especially
collegiate polo if we could inspire UCLA students to play and
compete for their school,” she said.

Also assisting will be Ardesher Radpour, formerly USC’s
Tommy Trojan, who brings his experience riding school mascot
Traveller at USC football games.

He also envisions UCLA joining the competitive scene.

“A crosstown rivalry would be great for both schools and
would bring a new level of interest in polo,” he said.

Call Duilio Cosenza, manager of the California Polo Association,
at 818-558-POLO (5676) for more information.
