Two Oregon schools down, same two Oregon schools to go.

Friday night, the No. 12 UCLA women’s volleyball team
(17-7, 11-5 Pac-10) completed the Pauley Pavilion sweep of the
Oregon schools with a 3-0 win over Oregon State (16-9, 9-7).

But just because it was a sweep doesn’t mean the win was
easy. UCLA needed late surges in all three games after either
matching OSU point-for-point or falling behind to the Beavers.

The Bruins did not play a stellar match. They just played well
enough to win. UCLA hit .298 to OSU’s .214 for the match.
Rather, the game was won on the serve and at the net, with UCLA
scoring 11 service aces to OSU’s four, and notching five
blocks to the Beavers’ two.

In game one, the two schools deadlocked at nine before UCLA went
on a 21-9 run to score a 30-18 win.

In game two, OSU went ahead by as many as six before UCLA caught
them at 20, and went on a 10-5 run to win 30-25.

The third game was tied as late as 17-17 before UCLA went on a
13-5 run to win 30-22.

“It just builds our team’s confidence that we can
take over a game when we are behind,” UCLA junior middle
blocker Angela Eckmier said.

Despite the imperfect play, the Bruins are happy to take the
win, their sixth in the last seven matches.

“We’ve been flat the last couple matches we’ve
played ““ it’s a big confidence booster,” UCLA
senior setter Erika Selsor said. “I’m really pleased
with how we controlled the match.”

The two teams get right back together tonight in Corvallis.
While the Bruins hope that only the venue changes, the Beavers
would just as well start from scratch.

“We’re looking forward to the same result,”
UCLA head coach Andy Banachowski said.

“We didn’t play very well. There’s definitely
some things we can do better to break down their system,”
Oregon State head coach Nancy Somera countered.

With the rematch starting less than 72 hours after the first
encounter ended, they’ll find out whose prediction is right
soon enough.
