UCLA sweeps Cal

The UCLA women’s volleyball team defeated Cal 30-24,
30-25, 30-21 Thursday night at Haas Pavilion. The No. 11 Bruins
were led by junior outside hitter Lauren Fendrick, who had 15 kills
on the night.

“We played well, and we got the job done,” Bruin
senior setter Erika Selsor said. “It definitely builds our
confidence up.”

Fendrick also added five total blocks, combining with junior
middle blocker Angela Eckmier’s six blocks to dominate the
net.

Senior outside hitter Ashley Bowles tallied 11 kills on the
night, as the Bruins hit at a .303 hitting clip.

UCLA (14-6, 9-4 Pac-10) extended its all-time record against Cal
(8-14, 3-11) to 40-0.

“At times, we were inconsistent,” UCLA head coach
Andy Banachowski said. “We were playing with Stanford in the
back of our minds.”

“But overall, we had control of the match
throughout.”

The Bruins face No. 3 Stanford Friday night at Maples Pavilion.
The Cardinal (21-2, 12-1) have a seven-match winning streak, as
well as a thirteen-match home winning streak.

It should be a tough matchup for UCLA, especially since the
Bruins will likely be without the services of Kristee Porter. The
senior All-American outside hitter is expected to miss her seventh
straight match after UCLA declared her ineligible Oct. 19.

“We’ll give Stanford our best shot,”
Banachowski said.
