Security officer passes away

Ed Poe, senior security officer for the UCLA Store and Ackerman
Student Union, died Nov. 6 in Los Angeles while sleeping. He was
56.

“Ed will leave a legacy of being professional yet friendly
and approachable, of always having a smile,” said Gene
Robinson, manager of security and loss prevention.

Poe worked for the Associated Students of UCLA for more than
four years. He received an Employee of the Year Award in 1999 for
“demonstrating an exceptional commitment far exceeding his
normal duties and responsibilities,” according to an ASUCLA
statement.

His concern for student safety at night in Ackerman led him to
push for the 24-hour study lounge in the union.

Poe is survived by his wife Lynn, his two children, ages 31 and
19, and three foster children, ages 10, 11 and 12 years old.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday at The Angeles
Funeral Home on 3875 Crenshaw Blvd.

Wireless Internet is focus of forum

Recent technological advancements have given new meaning to the
term “no strings attached.”

Wireless Internet and its implications were discussed at The
Wireless Internet Data and Enterprise Application Conference at
Bradley International Hall on Thursday.

“We are no longer desk bound,” said Leonard
Kleinrock, computer science professor and chief founder of the
Internet.

The conference aims to reveal to Internet companies new wireless
technology discoveries and allow peer interaction in this
field.

Arnol Joshi, co-founder of Bevocal, a company specializing in
voice-activated Internet services, introduced a device that will
allow a consumer to dial a number and verbally request information
or entertainment on the Web.

The conference resumes today at 8 a.m. and will discuss wireless
technology’s cost and implementation at universities.

Alumna takes mayoral post

On Nov. 2, Joy Chen began her tenure as director of economic
recovery, a post set by L.A. Mayor James Hahn, to implement
recommendations outlined by his Economic Impact Task Force.

In 1998, she earned both a master’s degree from the School
of Public Policy and Social Research and an M.B.A. from The
Anderson School.

Chen served as the project manager for the task force, appointed
by the mayor to address the city’s economic situation in the
wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
