Snag in the plan
The Bruins’ 2-1 loss last weekend in Corvallis to
perennial conference doormat Oregon State was the first to the
Beavers since a shutout in 1995.
UCLA (13-2-0, 4-1-0 Pac-10) was the overwhelming choice by the
conference’s coaches to win the Pac-10. The Bruins garnered
eight of the 10 first-place votes in the preseason poll, while
Washington and California each got one vote.
But fear not, Bruin faithful. UCLA still controls its own
destiny, despite its first conference loss. The Bruins can win the
Pac-10 with victories in their final four games.
The conference standings bear close resemblance to those in
football, where five teams have one loss. Aside from 5-0-0 and No.
2 Stanford, three other teams have one loss, including Washington,
UCLA’s Friday opponent.
Bruins on TV
Friday’s 2:00 p.m. game at Drake Stadium against
Washington will be televised by Fox Sports Net West on a tape-delay
basis. The game will air Sunday at 1:30 p.m. and next Wednesday at
noon.
Friday games are customarily played at night on Spaulding Field,
which has lights. The Bruins have not played a Friday home game
during the day in the last two seasons. FSNW televised UCLA’s
5-0 drubbing of Stanford last year at Spaulding.
Switch in the back
UCLA head coach Jillian Ellis started freshman goalkeeper Sarah
Lombardo Friday night in the 2-0 victory over Oregon. Lombardo
faced just two shots in the first half and was not forced to make a
save.
Senior CiCi Peterson played the second half and amassed seven
saves against a resilient Duck offense that fired 14 shots.
Peterson has started 13 of the Bruins’ 15 games and has a
0.62 goals against average in 1152:27 of play. Lombardo has started
the last two.
Lombardo allowed one goal in the OSU’s upset win on
Sunday. Peterson allowed a goal in relief in the second half.
This ‘n’ that
UCLA’s home unbeaten streak stands at 21 games, dating
back to Nov. 1998.
Senior forward Mary-Frances Monroe was selected as a candidate
for the Missouri Athletic Club’s Collegiate Soccer Player of
the Year Award … Junior midfielder Tracey Winzen may play Friday
against Washington, pending doctor’s clearance concerning a
thumb she broke three weeks ago … The Bruins fell to No. 5 in the
latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll.
