The UCLA women’s tennis team dominated at the Omni Hotels
Regional Tournament in San Diego over the weekend, winning both the
singles and doubles tournament. First seed Sara Walker, a senior,
won the singles tournament, beating rival second seed Jewel
Peterson from USC in the final, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.
“She (Walker) lost to Jewel in the final last year, and
this year, she won by a matter of a few points,” Bruin head
coach Stella Sampras said. “She played very
aggressive.”
In the doubles tournament, Walker, along with partner Petya
Marinova, won the tournament by beating UCLA teammates Megan
Bradley and Lauren Fisher 9-8. Last month, Marinova-Walker also
beat Bradley-Fisher in the final of the Adidas Invitational.
“It was different (playing against Bradley-Fisher),”
Petya Marinova said. “I practice against them, and
don’t normally play against teammates.”
In fact, UCLA had all three doubles teams in the semifinals,
with Sarah Gregg and Catherine Hawley losing to Bradley-Fisher in
the semifinals, 8-4.
“Three (doubles teams) in the semis is great,”
Sampras said. “It’s great to sit back and watch them
compete against each other.”
However, the more exciting semifinal doubles match was
Marinova-Walker’s 9-8(4) upset win over USC’s top
seeded Tiffany Brymer-Jewel Peterson. They came back from a 5-3
deficit to win the match.
“They played excellent,” Sampras said. “It
went to a tie-breaker and it could have gone either way.
They’re are a team we’re going to have to
play.”
Freshman Sarah Gregg also did well in the singles tournament,
going all the way to the quarterfinals.
“This was a great tournament,” Sampras said.
“I get to see where the players are at this point. This gives
us a good indication of how we’ll do against teams like
Arizona and USC when we see them during the season.”
