Three games in three days can take their toll on any team. But
the UCLA ice hockey team wouldn’t mind it so much if they
could duplicate last week’s results.
As they get ready to play Stanford today and again on Saturday,
after Thursday’s game at UC San Diego, the Bruins are ready
to build on a successful road trip to the Bay Area. UCLA (2-3, 1-1
Pac-8) played three tight games, winning 4-3 at UC Davis and
splitting the games versus Cal.
Due to midterms and injuries, UCLA was only able to field a
12-man roster last Thursday at Cal.
Shorthanded throughout the game, the Bruins jumped out to a 4-2
lead before tired legs gave away to a 7-5 loss in the Pac-8
opener.
The rematch two days later saw UCLA field a full squad at the
Berkeley Ice Arena and the result was a 4-3 shootout win. Bruin
goalie Matt Miller stopped all but one penalty shot while center
James Costello, winger Rob Morel and defenseman Eric Grahling
scored for UCLA.

“It’s good to have some wins under our belt,”
Miller said. “We know that we can win now and we plan to
continue.”
The Bruins did suffer one setback. Left winger Dave Cokely
separated his shoulder Saturday against Cal. He was re-evaluated
late Thursday afternoon and his status for this weekend’s
games against Stanford is in question.
One of last week’s many stars on offense was Grahling.
With what Bruin assistant coach Mike Siegel called a
“powerful shot,” Grahling scored the game winner
against UC Davis with 1:53 left in the game.
“One of the big concerns was depth on the team,”
Cokely said. “If you look at the scoring over the three days,
it was pretty much spread out evenly.”
