Grab your party hats and noisemakers ““ it’s
UCLA’s 75th birthday at the Westwood campus.

Long gone are the days of being known as “Berkeley
Jr.” UCLA has been the most applied-to school in the nation
for the past two years, becoming its own elite institution.

Our academic reputation is among the country’s finest. Our
medical center is the best in the West ““ and we’re
building an even better one. Our athletic teams dominate national
rankings and bring home championship banners every year. Our
professional schools are some of the most respected institutions in
America.

UCLA community members and students often get caught up in
criticizing the things they don’t like about the university.
But they must remember good things come out of UCLA too. We conduct
research, outreach projects and community-wide activities that
benefit the public. Mayor Jim Hahn has even declared today
“UCLA in LA Day,” in celebration of the contributions
UCLA has made to Los Angeles.

This campus is not only a place of learning, it is a pillar of
the community. It’s a place where individuals come together
to better themselves, to grow, to build relationships with others
and to prepare themselves for the future.

UCLA isn’t made of buildings. It’s made up of the
best in all of us.

So happy birthday, Bruins ““ and best of luck in the next
75 years.
