Team makes late round charge, moves up ranks

Playing at the Stanford Golf Course, the UCLA women’s golf
team was able to do what Stanford alum Tiger Woods has become
famous for ““ mount a late final round charge.

The Bruins entered the final round of the Stanford Pepsi
Invitational in fifth place with a two-round score of 588, 12 over
par, leaving the Bruins 18 shots behind first-place Tulsa, No. 3.
As any golfer knows, however, Sunday is moving day.

Sophomore Gina Umeck, working under cool and breezy conditions,
led the Bruins with a final round 71, which earned her a ninth
place individual finish in the tournament. Along with Umeck’s
strong round came senior Alicia Um’s formidable 69, good
enough to propel her to an 11th place individual finish.

With these two impressive individual performances, the Bruins
were able to record a 287, which was 7 shots lower than both their
first and second round scores of 294. Though they did not move up
in the tournament’s standings, the team was able to make up
substantial ground. UCLA entered the final round four shots out of
fourth place, five out of third, and 12 out of second. By the end
of the tournament, the team was able to substantially move up and
end with two shots out of third place and only three shots out of
second.

Fully impressed by this superb final round was third-year head
coach Carrie Leary.

“This was the best round I’ve ever coached,”
Leary said. “They managed the course really well, and hit it
well too.”

Propelled by Stacy Prammasudh’s course record 13 under
203, Tulsa was able to win the tournament with a team score
855.

With this young team coming together so early in the season,
things look good for UCLA.
