Super subs
UCLA’s two wins last weekend were keyed by players coming
off the bench. In the 2-0 win over Cal on Friday, sophomore
midfielder Adolfo Gregorio came off the bench to score the
game’s first goal. Junior forward Tim Pierce scored the
thrilling game-winning goal against Stanford after re-entering the
game in the 67th minute. This year, seven of UCLA’s 18 goals
have come from substitutes.
Battling the best
UCLA (6-4-2, 2-0-0) is 2-2-1 against ranked teams this year
after their upset victory of No. 2 Stanford over the weekend. The
team travels to No. 5 Washington this week in a Pac-10
showdown.
Home field advantage
Sunday’s game against Stanford was witnessed by a
season-high 3,466 fans at Drake Stadium.
The previous high for this season was 836 fans for the game
against Loyola Marymount on Sept. 30.
Pesky Huskies
Washington carries a seven-game winning streak into
Friday’s contest against UCLA. The defending Pac-10 champion
Huskies (9-1-0, 1-0-0) are coached by former UCLA assistant coach
Dean Wurzberger, powered by a balanced scoring attack that has seen
six players score two or more goals this season. UCLA has lost its
last four matches to Washington, with the Huskies having beaten the
Bruins the last four meetings at home.
Quick facts
UCLA will face a top-10 team this weekend for the fourth time
this season when they take on Washington.
The Bruins are 1-1-1 in games against top 10 opponents this
year.
Despite having three fewer overall wins than both Stanford and
Washington, UCLA is the Pac-10 leader with a perfect 2-0 conference
record.
UCLA remains unranked in the latest NSCAA poll, despite having
defeated Cal and Stanford over the weekend.
