“Zoolander” Directed by Ben Stiller Starring
Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Will Ferrell, Christine Taylor, Milla
Jovovich, and Jerry Stiller
It seems like the entire Hollywood neighborhood literally came
out to help a really, really, good looking guy. Ben Stiller’s
“Zoolander” features surprising cameos from various
Hollywood stars. Some say a line or two while some just smile, but
all add an ironic sense of reality to this outrageous comedy. Actor
Will Ferrell, who dyed his hair for the part, successfully portrays
a psychotic fashion designer. After watching her in action, actor
Milla Jovovich, one of the only real models in the film, seems
almost wicked at heart. And both Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson give
off a stylish, supermodel aura. It seems like a typical story of a
man on a mission to help save the world. But this man isn’t
an ordinary hero. Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) is a supermodel who
is praised and admired by those in his field for his many looks,
but he’s still searching for something more. During
Derek’s mission for self-discovery, Mugatu (Will Ferrell), a
famous but evil fashion designer, decides to brainwash Derek into
assassinating the prime minister of Malaysia, an action that will
indirectly benefit Mugatu’s infamous clothing line. Ben
Stiller, as a writer, producer, actor and director, is not once
disappointing throughout the film. The writing is clever in the way
the story suggests the underestimated power of the fashion
industry. The scenes capture both the obvious and subtle humor that
is intended. And the actors including Stiller, suit their parts
perfectly, uniquely shaping their characters and committing to
their roles. Although some scenes can be ridiculously absurd, the
actors deliver their lines in such a convincing way that the comedy
is never a turn-off. The film takes a humorous and sometimes even
brutal approach to portraying models, playing around with their
levels of intelligence. And the costumes and cinematography, also
exaggerations of the fashion industry, are aesthetically pleasing.
Audiences looking for a silly movie are sure to laugh at the story
and characters, all the while delighting in special appearances and
appreciating the outrageous scenes that ultimately make the film a
success.
