Tuesday morning’s terrorist attacks have paralyzed the
industry and have prompted the postponement of two television
specials including the Latin Grammy Awards and the Primetime Emmy
Awards.
The second annual Latin Grammys, which were to be held in Los
Angeles Tuesday, were canceled early that morning.
“Due to the unimaginable events that have occurred…the
Grammys and all related activities have been canceled,”
according to the statement from the Recording Academy and CBS.
It was also announced that the 53rd annual primetime Emmy
Awards, which was planned to air on Sept. 16, will be rescheduled
at a more appropriate time. Accordingly, the Emmy finals judging
date on Sept. 14 has also been moved.
“We are watching this national tragedy unfold on
television with everyone else today with the deepest
sadness,” according to the joint statement from the Annual
Primetime Emmy Awards (ATAS) and CBS. “Therefore, out of
respect to the victims, their families and our fellow citizens, the
ATAS and CBS Television will postpone the Emmy Awards.”
Hollywood and the music industry is further affected with the
cancellation of shows, tapings and major concerts
“We canceled our taping of “˜Politically
Incorrect’ (yesterday) and have rescheduled it for Thursday
whether it will run or not,” said Mike Woods, owner of AAA
Audience, an audience development company.
“There are two main reasons for canceling. The first
reason being that the show would probably be preempted by other
news stories, and secondly, studios have closed because they could
be possible targets,” Woods added.
Madonna’s sold-out concert at Staples Center was also
canceled Tuesday night, which will either be rescheduled or
refunded according to the venue’s box office recording. Her
concerts on Thursday and Friday night at Staples Center will take
place as planned.
The Black Crowes Concert last night at the Greek Theatre was
postponed as well, and patrons are asked to check the
theater’s Web site for a rescheduled date to be
announced.
In addition, amusement parks such as Disneyland, Universal
Studios and Sea World were closed Tuesday, however have now
reopened.
Disneyland Resorts, which has not closed in response to a
tragedy since the Kennedy assassination, released an official
message Tuesday morning on its Web site after notification of the
attacks.
“We… have immediately taken steps to secure the
park’s area,” said Ray Gomez, a Disneyland Resort
spokesperson. “We don’t want to discuss our security
measures because that would compromise those measures, but we have
been monitoring the situation and communication is close with local
and state officials.”
Universal Studios and City Walk in Universal City, Calif. has
also reopened all restaurants, retail stores and entertainment
venues associated with Universal, today.
The Los Angeles County Fair, which was closed yesterday, also
reopened this morning.
