As of 11:45 AM, 9/11/01

Shortly before 11 a.m. PST, officials estimated the death toll
at about 1,000.

Earlier in the day, President Bush addressed the nation from
Barksdale Air Force Base in Lousiana, after flying in from
Florida.

He promised to “hunt down and punish those responsible for
these cowardly acts” and has ordered the military to be on
“high-alert status.”

Top congressional leaders have been directed to a safe,
undisclosed location.
