Coach says football team ready to play

UCLA head coach Bob Toledo was optimistic about the
Bruins’ chances this season at a press conference on Friday.
The football team began their fall practices on Saturday at
Spaulding Field.

Toledo said he was encouraged by the way the team has played
thus far. He singled out the size of the offensive line, who he
described as “redwoods.”

Toledo said that the team’s No. 1 priority for the season
is maintaining their health. “The teams that finish strong
are the ones that have the players they start the season with when
they end the season,” he said.

Injury updates

Junior fullback Chris Jackson won’t be able to play this
season due to a knee injury.

Senior wide receiver John Dubravac has a back problem, and UCLA
will try to redshirt him this year.

Mike Seidman had orthoscopic surgery on his knee Friday. Coach
Toledo does not expect him to play much, if he plays at all.

Three players get walk-on scholarships

Dennis Fox (TE), Devon Reece (WR) and Kevin Strong (LB) were
awarded walk-on scholarships on Friday night.

Toledo has now awarded 18 walk-on scholarships in his six years.
“We have the best walk-on group since I’ve been here,
and I’m really excited about that,” he said Friday.
