Staff Speaks

By Daily Bruin Staff

July 15, 2001 9:00 p.m.

Have you ever had a strange day? I know I just did.

It started off with my usual trip to the parking kiosk adjacent
Lot 8. I asked the parking services attendant for help, and instead
of the usual, “Which lot, sir?”I was told there was
specific parking for construction workers.

I’m not a construction worker. I’m a student ““
a Chicano student.

Later that day I ran into an old acquaintance who had quite a
few reservations about my being an editor at the Daily Bruin. She
lectured me on the consequences of “selling out” and
reprimanded me for being seduced by the “mainstream”
instead of being more active in my own community.

Maybe it was just the fact that both things happened on the same
day that made it strange, or maybe it was the ability of both
people to predetermine my intentions and character.
