Men’s gymnastics
Tonight marks the opening of the 10th annual Peter Vidmar
Men’s Gymnastics Invitational at the Wooden Center. The meet
takes place through Saturday, and will involve gymnasts of all ages
and all classes of competition.
At 7:30 tonight is the UCLA Collegiate Invite, at which Arizona
State, UC Santa Barbara, University of Illinois/Champaign and
Washington compete.
On Friday there will be three sessions of competition for ages
9-10+, 7-8 and all ages. On Saturday, there are also three
sessions, one for Special Olympics participants, one for all ages,
and one session for 14-15, 16-18 and 19+ gymnasts.
So far the event has registered competitors from 51 clubs in 11
states, as well as gymnasts from Canada, Finland, Iceland, Mexico
and Russia.
In past years, the proceeds of the Peter Vidmar Invitational
supported the UCLA men’s gymnastics club team. Although that
team no longer exists, some of the proceeds from this year will go
to the UCLA club program. Profits will also go to a scholarship
foundation for financially disadvantaged youth.
Shooting team
Last weekend the shooting team participated in the 2001
Collegiate Pistol Sectional, which determines whether or not the
team will receive an invitation to the 2001 Collegiate National
Championships. The Sectional is held around the nation (on Feb.
17-18 for the West Coast and Midwest and on Feb. 24-25 for the East
Coast). The top 30 individuals in each event are invited to compete
in the National Championships and the top 10 teams (each comprised
of four shooters) are invited from each event.
UCLA captured four medals. Saturday senior Bob Maling received
the silver medal in free pistol with a score of 485, trailing
winner Steve Cummings of Palomar College, who scored 523.
Bruin junior Jerry Stepan received a bronze medal with a score
of 456 and freshman Sergey Moudriak, in his first time shooting the
event, shot a 432.
The open and women’s air pistol matches were held Sunday.
Junior Melanie Gainsbury took the gold medal with a score of 336
(out of 400). Maling received the silver medal in the open match
with a score of 543. Cummings won this event as well with a score
of 550.
The shooting team scored a total of 2,095 in the team match, but
was edged out by Palomar College’s 2,100. Last year UCLA was
invited to the Collegiate Nationals for air pistol with a score of
2,092.
