Earlier this week, many people celebrated Valentine’s
Day. If you had a boyfriend or girlfriend, do you think your
relationship could survive an experience like "Temptation Island?"
What is your opinion about society’s concept of love
today? Nick Celano Second-year
Microbiology "It would be hard not to cheat with all those
beautiful women on the island. If I were there alone and single,
I’d definitely have fun and have a great experience. The way love
is portrayed today by the media is scandalous, it’s not real. The
media shows you what they want you to see and sometimes it’s
stupid." Jessica Lopez Second-year History "If I
were on ‘Temptation Island’ I’d mind my own business and whatever
happens will happen. Everything comes about for a reason. The show
is meant for entertainment, and if people are willing to go on it
and make fools of themselves, I’m fine with that. If you find true
love then you’re lucky, because today sex is just for fun."
Satsuki Koyama Second-year Political science "Our
society has arrived at a point where we market love. Valentine’s
Day isn’t a real holiday, it has simply emerged as a means by which
a lot of businesses can make a lot of money from something that
should be a deep, human experience. I refuse to watch ‘Temptation
Island’ because I don’t believe love should be degenerated by this
type of programming." Warren Rodgers Second-year
Sociology "Though I think most of the show is fake, I would be able
to survive it without a problem. I think true love still exists in
today’s society and the sexual aspect of it is an independent
factor. Though most people start off with the sexual part of love
first and then develop it, you can have both. I think love in
today’s society is similar to that in the past; it’s just talked
about more." Adam Silberman Second-year Spanish
and psychology "When it comes down to it, ‘Temptation Island’ is
just a fantasy. If people are really in love, they will remain that
way. I don’t think anyone on that island would break up if they
truly liked each other. If I were on ‘Temptation Island’, I would
have a good time, but I wouldn’t stray from my girlfriend."
Sanaz Tachernia Third-year Sociology "If you
really love someone, I don’t see how you would engage in something
like the ‘Temptation Island’ show. The way in which love is
portrayed in society has changed, and though people express it
differently, it has become largely superficial. ‘Temptation Island’
is all about publicity – it’s really lame." Speaks Out compiled by
