UCLA shooters score personal bests
On Nov. 4, the UCLA shooting team had a match in Chino, at the
same range where the 1984 Olympic Games shooting events were held.
The Bruins had two returning shooters from last year’s team,
who attended the 2000 Intercollegiate Pistol Championships.
That weekend, UCLA junior Jerry Stepan shot a personal best
score of 528. Senior Bob Maling shot a 541. These scores will be
averaged along with other monthly matches, and All-American
rankings will be determined based on the scores.
Matches are one hour, 45 minutes long, and 60 shots are fired in
that time period. A single shot is scored ranging from 0 (missing
the target) to 10 (bullseye). The total score listed is the sum of
all shots fired.
The team is practicing for its sectional competition in
February, which determines who goes to the Intercollegiate
Championships. The top 10 teams, comprised of four shooters each,
and the top 30 individuals are invited. Last year, UCLA made it to
the championships and was ranked ninth in the nation. Maling ranked
15th individually.
Lacrosse goes 2-1 at LMU tournament
From Nov. 4-5 the UCLA men’s lacrosse team participated in
the Jesuit Classic Tournament at Loyola Marymount. The Bruins
played three 40-minute games and went 2-1.
In the first game against USC, the Bruins outscored the Trojans
4-1 in the second half to earn a 7-3 victory. In the second game,
UCLA faced tournament host and league rival LMU. In an outstanding
defensive performance, the Bruins blanked the Lions 5-0.
The team didn’t fare as well in the third game, which they
lost 4-2 to San Diego State. The Bruins put themselves behind
early, committing several costly penalties and giving the Aztecs a
lead that the Bruins couldn’t erase. UCLA sophomore attackman
Chico Tunney led the Bruins in scoring for the weekend with five
goals and two assists.
