School tuition to increase with Proposition
38

I am responding to Max Roberts’ article, “Misconceptions
distort Prop. 38
,” (Daily Bruin, Viewpoint, Nov. 2).

Like many people who talk about Proposition 38, the school
voucher initiative, Roberts brought up the issue of what happens to
the scholarship money from the $4,000 voucher if the private school
the student chooses to attend charges less than that amount.

What people do not realize is that schools receiving this
voucher would not keep their tuition at less than $4,000. More than
likely they would increase it.

If a school can get money from the state without charging
parents at all, then the most that schools would charge would be
$4,000. In most cases, schools would more than likely increase
their tuitions to a little less than their current tuition plus
$4,000.

By doing this, they could maximize their profit, but at the same
time tell parents that they are paying less than the amount prior
to the voucher initiative if it were to pass. In either situation,
there is no way that private voucher school tuitions will be less
than $4000.

Steinem’s speech promotes myth

I’m really glad that Rahul Varshney’s article,
Votes for Green
candidate won’t hurt Democrats
,” (Daily Bruin,
Viewpoint, Nov. 2), presented a rebuttal to Gloria Steinem who
presented very one-sided point of view about presidential candidate
Ralph Nader.

I feel that he adequately addressed the myth that voting for
Nader would promote George W. Bush. I think he also provided a good
analysis of what all three candidates stand for.

I would vote for Nader because not only does he support the
issues that I believe in, but he also has integrity and principles
that I have not seen in the other two candidates.
