Runaway truck crashes into De Neve Plaza site

A dining services truck hit the De Neve Plaza construction site
early Wednesday morning, causing minimal damage.
The truck, belonging to on-campus housing, rolled down an
incline at the back loading dock of Sproul Hall and came to a
standstill after hitting a construction fence and lamppost directly
across from Sproul Hall.
“It didn’t impact the construction site at all
except for the fence,” said Mary Niven, associate director of
dining services, adding that work on De Neve Plaza will continue as
planned.

Police have yet to determine what caused the accident. They do
not know if the truck started rolling back due to a mechanical
problem such as brake failure or if the parking brakes were not up
properly, Niven said.
Police do not have any witnesses at this point, and no one was
in the truck at the time of the accident.
“Unfortunately, no one was around to see it,” said
Gabriel Berto of Facilities Management.
University officials are still assessing damages to the truck
and construction site.
The truck was towed away around 2:30 a.m.
Construction on De Neve Plaza resumed as usual Wednesday. Parts
of the complex are scheduled to open by Fall Quarter when on-campus
students move into the dorm.
