Many universities have added a diversity requirement to
their curricula. Should ethnic and gender studies should be added
to UCLA’s General Education requirements?

"I think it should be optional so that people appreciate its
benefits more. If it was required, I think that people would resent
it."

“There are a lot of people here who are closed-minded.
They need to open up their minds and learn more about what’s
around them.”

“Yes, I think that diversity studies should be a
requirement. People of color are underrepresented on campus,
especially with Proposition 209. That’s really reduced at
least the ranks of African American students on campus. It will
bring about education to other students about ethnic
diversity.”

“It shouldn’t be mandatory because in a place like
UCLA, if you’re willing to learn about other ethnic groups,
then you’ll do it on your own. You won’t necessarily
have to be taught in a class. It shouldn’t be
forced.”
