If Julie Ryu had possessed signatory power while working as this
year’s Student Welfare Commission Chief of Staff, the
commission would probably be in much better shape. But since this
year’s leadership often let the “little things”
““ such as signing off on funding requests ““ slide, SWC
failed to live up to its potential.
Luckily, Ryu, a fourth-year psychobiology student, is just the
person to get the commission back on its feet.
During the past two years that Ryu has served as an SWC staffer,
she’s seen many useful programs fall by the wayside. Though
she praises this year’s women’s forums and the UCLA
Easter Egg Hunt, it’s obvious she misses the
commission’s previously successful services.
Once in office, Ryu should make reviving programs such as the
Children’s Walk for Life, condom distribution, CPR and
self-defense classes her first priority.
She should then take some time to pare down the lengthy list of
new programs she’d like to try out next year. A year is not
enough time to rebuild old programs and create numerous new ones.
Although stress relief workshops, increased lighting on campus and
fitness testing are commendable goals, existing programs, such as
ROLL-AIDS UCLA and blood drives shouldn’t suffer because a
commission ““ and commissioner ““ are overworked.
During her third year in SWC, Ryu will have plenty to do.
Between reinstalling old, but popular programs, and maintaining
this year’s successful services, she might want to stop and
catch her breath; then she can cure the rest of the campus’
ills.
