After working in the External Vice President’s office for
the past two years, Praxis slate member Portia Pedro, a third-year
international development studies student, has learned how to lead
it.
Her extensive experience and strong ideas will serve her well as
she represents UCLA’s undergraduates at the state and
national levels. While working on increasing financial aid,
reducing fees, creating a UC hate crimes policy and attempting to
increase diversity, Pedro will be a valuable asset to all
students.
Pedro also understands the internal workings of her office, as
well as the logistics involved.
Unfortunately, she also knows what can happen when the office
goes without leadership. For some time this year, the elected
External Vice President ““ Sophia Paek ““ was not around
to lead the office and make important decisions. Without a leader
in the office, Pedro and her co-workers had to step forward and
take on extra work. This left a mark on her, and she is a stronger
candidate because of it.
Pedro epitomized one of this year’s stronger candidates;
she had the pertinent experience, and a deep understanding of what
her job entails. Furthermore, she actually seems to have researched
what other students care about as well.
