USAC, under the Praxis administration, has neglected its
responsibility to improve the quality of educational life for all
students here at UCLA. Praxis members have used the student
government to promote their own political agenda and advance the
causes of a few special-interest groups. These lobbying efforts
have been financed with the revenue from mandatory student
fees.
USAC is spending thousands of dollars ““ your money ““
to advance its own narrow political agenda. Praxis members have
taken advantage of UCLA students long enough. They have abused
their power, refused to listen to the practical needs of students
and fueled racial tension on this campus.
Now is the time to act; now is the time for change.
I will raise the standard of equality in USAC. On a practical
level, this means fair and equal funding for all student advocacy
groups and officially recognized student groups. This means a
distribution of USAC finances allowing for activities and programs
that benefit all UCLA students, and effecting change in the area of
campus safety, cultural diversity, parking, women’s issues
and student-professor relations.
As director of women’s issues for the Student Welfare
Commission, I organized the Women’s Forum 2000. Having worked
with the Student Welfare Commission, I have gained practical and
hands-on experience in the area of student government
leadership.
Instead of the narrow, political agenda of Praxis, I will
promote equal representation. I will ensure that the thousands of
dollars USAC distributes next year go fairly to the diverse student
groups and concerns on our campus.
