Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down

One-stop web site

Thumbs up to students at the University of Michigan for creating
a web site that makes college life a whole lot easier. On this
site, students can access all of the essentials that college
students need. The site offers RideNET, a list of students offering
rides to campuses across the country; reality bytes, a national
list of students looking to sublet their apartments or houses; Baer
Cares, an advice service; and As the World Sterns, an online
editorial site featuring commentaries on issues affecting college
students. College Friends and Impact Technologies, Ltd. is the
sponsoring site.

Dealing with tuition

Thumbs down to a bill passed by the Michigan Senate which allows
judges the option of removing a student’s financial aid if that
student is convicted of a controlled substance felony. The bill
seems to be targeting college students who most likely are selling
to stay in school. Although selling drugs is obviously the wrong
way to make money, it should be a sign to our universities that
students need more financial aid, not less. Instead of punishing
these students, they should be counseled on how to access more
money in a safer and more rewarding way.

In times of need

Thumbs up to the University of Minnesota for offering various
tuition fee waivers and deferments to students affected by the
Asian market crisis. South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia
have been hit the hardest by market failures. Almost one-third of
the more than 457,000 foreign exchange students across the nation
come from those four countries, and the waiver will cut 25, 50 or
100 percent off the non-resident tuition for students demonstrating
financial need.
