Thunbs up/Thumbs down
Late to the wrong class?
Thumbs down to the winter schedule of classes which has done
little other than provide major inconveniences to students
attempting to locate their classes. The times, locations and even
meeting days of some courses have been misquoted in the schedule of
classes. To many UCLA students, this handbook is a savior, and when
it lies we feel deceived.
MAPS shows the right road
Thumbs up to Ohio University for reacting positively to a
decline in African American enrollment. A recruitment group on
campus has made a commitment to reverse the declining trend which
has become common throughout most universities over the past few
years.
Students have organized overnight stays, extended stays and
basic exposure to campus life through other programs. The programs,
called MAPS – Multicultural Access Programs – allow high school
students to visit with counselors, financial aid officers, attend
student panels and other social functions. The program’s goal is to
increase recruitment and retention for all universities, not just
Ohio’s. They stress that students need not choose OHU, just choose
college.
Coming together
Thumbs up to the Hewlett Foundation for providing eight
universities with a $75,000 grant to be used toward the promotion
of diversity and cultural awareness. A $25,000 supplement is also
included. The grant will fund "empirical benchmark surveys," summer
institutes and projects designed to create dialogue between
students and faculty members about diversity issues. The goal of
the grants is to develop a more interactively diverse campus inside
and outside of the classroom. The ideas sound great. However, let’s
hope people will participate and take these issues seriously.
