W. TENNIS: Match won despite absent powerhouses Basica,
Roubanova

Utter domination.

This is the best way to describe the fantastic play by the UCLA
women’s tennis team in Wednesday’s match against a lethargic UC
Irvine club.

The Bruins entered their first dual match of the season with a
No. 2 national ranking and showed why they are so highly
respected.

Without the services of sophomores Amanda Basica, UCLA’s No. 1
player, or Katia Roubanova, UCLA posted a 9-0, blistering a clearly
outmatched Anteater team.

Sophomore Annica Cooper, a winner at the Milwaukee Tennis
Classic earlier in the month and a finalist at last weekend’s
Pac-10 Indoor Tennis Championship, filled in for the injured Basica
in the No. 1 spot and won easily over Irvine’s Darian Chappell 6-1,
6-2.

In fact, five of the Bruins’ six singles matches were easily won
in straight sets.

Sophomore Elizabeth Schmidt; senior Kelly Rudolph, a winner at
last weekend’s Pac-10 Indoor Tennis Championships; junior Brandi
Freudenberg and freshman Cristina Popescu all recorded resounding
victories of the two-frame variety.

As a result of the key injuries of UCLA’s top players, freshman
walk-on Becky Raijfer was given the nod and knocked off Irvine’s
Patty Villaroman in a long battle 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to preserve the
shutout.

In women’s collegiate tennis, a 6-0 team score in singles action
wins the match, but as both teams wished to practice their doubles
play, they agreed to continue.

The result: three UCLA victories in as many matches, including a
8-0 victory by Kelly Rudolph and Brandi Freudenberg.

The Bruins continue their domination over the Anteaters as they
now own a 26-2 overall record against them.

UCLA will have today off as they prepare for their next match
against Utah tomorrow.

The showdown will be held at the Los Angeles Tennis Center,
where the Bruins will once again be without Basica and
Roubanova.
