Thumbs up/ thumbs down

Can’t buy a thing

Thumbs down to the Office of Residential Life for decreasing the
value of lunch and dinner coupons. Already not enough to begin
with, the lunch coupon value decreased by 5 cents to $1.85, while
the dinner coupons decreased by a dime to $1.90. The discrepancy
between the value of the coupons and the price for meals at the
dining halls is due to the cost of staffing and facilities. With
$1.85 for a meal, it looks as though ORL is discouraging any
alternatives to eating at the dining halls. About the only things
you can feed with $1.85 are the squirrels.

Sleeping with the president

Thumbs up to university administrators at George Washington
University for hosting their ninth annual Presidential Sleepover.
The GW president and vice president for Student and Academic
Support Services were among the participants to spend the night in
freshman rooms. Before the night was over, a discussion took place
with students and the faculty discussing concerns and issues of
importance. Unfortunately, UCLA could never participate in such a
program because of the lack of space – the chancellor would have to
sleep in the hallways.

Women in NBA

Thumbs up to the first ever female referees entering into the
male dominated NBA. Two were chosen after numerous sports camps for
training refs, officiating years in professional summer leagues and
new professional women’s games in the WNBA. The women will join the
58 member male roster of refs. Responses are mixed: some support
them, while others like Barkley, Rodman, and Bulls coach Phil
Jackson are not sure. Rodman insisted that he was fine with the
idea as long as they did not mind his ritual butt-pinch that he
does to all refs prior to the game. Coach Jackson claimed that he
had no doubt that there are more qualified men out there, but the
NBA just feels the need to be PC and cross the gender line. Barkley
doesn’t support the notion because he said that he treats all refs
the same – like dogs, and he was not comfortable treating women
that way. We say "You go girls!"
