Speaks Out
Do you think that the characteristics of the recent slayings of
Gianni Versace and others indicate that serial killings might be
perpetuated by media attention?Jeff Huang
First-year computer science/engineering student
I’d have to say that the media is doing its job.We need the
media to report these things, otherwise we would never know what’s
going on. If you give the media free reign, it might actually help
by giving out details so somebody might be able to identify or help
find the person in question.Christine Ko

I think he’s doing it for other reasons, like he was hurt or he
had some sort of vendetta against people.

The media is a perfect example of the American way to do things.
They take anything that’s dealing with other people’s pain and
suffering and show it just because that’s what sells.Angel

I think constant dwelling on the issue tends to encourage the
activity for those that want attention in society and don’t know
how to get it.

I agree that he’s doing this because of the publicity. I mean,
he’s going to die, or he’s going to get caught and he’s going to go
to jail, so he might as well go out with a bang.

I think it is, and I think it is interesting also that there was
a lot more media attention after he killed Versace versus when he
killed the other people. It was totally exaggerated and to a point
I think that’s what they want.Mark De Vany
Fourth-year classical civilization student
The media might help out, but I don’t think they perpetuate
serial killings. If you’re screwed in the head, you’re screwed in
the head.
