Monday, 7/7/97 Thumbs up/thumbs down

Hoop dreams come true Thumbs Up to the Women’s National
Basketball Association. Finally, the tremendous talent of women
athletes is getting the exposure and compensation it deserves.
Internet anyone? Thumbs Up to Bill Gates and the Microsoft
Corporation for donating $400 million worth of computer software
and technical support to libraries in underprivileged areas. From
womb to tomb Thumbs Down to the recent rash of infant murders,
termed neonaticide by law enforcement officials. Neonaticide is a
disturbing phenomenon in society that we cannot be proud of. One
for the record books Thumbs Down to the State of Texas. Its 21st
execution during the month of June broke the record for the number
of executions in a year. It’s barely July fellas, slow down and
pace yourselves … after all there is no room for error. Smoke and
mirrors? Thumbs Up to the Attorneys General of 40 states for
bringing a class-action lawsuit against the major tobacco
companies. The stringent restrictions against advertisements just
might put a dent in the number of youth smokers (hit the road
Joe!). However, Thumbs Down, because the $368.5 billion the tobacco
companies are supposed to pay, is likely to be paid by addicted
cigarette smokers in the form of higher prices. Too late Thumbs
Down to California Gov. Pete Wilson and Attorney General Dan
Lungren for waiting until the Monday before a settlement was
reached to join the class-action anti-tobacco suit.
