As a former UCLA graduate student, I found Timothy Burke’s
column, "Give me a shot of whiskey" (April 24), interesting but a
bit late to have kept me from becoming too narrow minded.
From his column, I conclude that any mess in Washington can be
resolved by having local bars or pubs inside the Senate chambers
and that on campus bars or pubs at UCLA would work wonders, if not
miracles, with the student body. I now more clearly understand why
our Congress members are the way they are — bars and pubs are too
distant.

Squirrel power

Go, squirrels, go! Squirrels need to take the campus back!
Caribou, join the revolution! The "man" came and dominated their
countries (now known as the United States, Mexico and the
Philippines) with their erection of buildings and oppressive
mentalities to kick the squirrels out of their natural habitat. Of
course they’re angry! I am surprised they have not bitten more than
just a leg! Go, squirrels, go!
