Saxophonist Joshua Redman planned to go to law school, but
instead he ended up taking the jazz world by storm.

"I was only planning on taking a year off between Harvard and
Yale Law," Redman says. "I moved to New York, into a house with a
lot of professional musicians.

"They were all serious about music, and I just wanted to relax
and have a good time. Part of their seriousness rubbed off on
me."

Redman began to do gigs around town and, before he knew it, he
had won the Thelonius Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition
and been named Jazz Artist of the Year by Rolling Stone in
1994.

Fresh from these triumphs, Redman brings his unique style to the
Wadsworth Theater tonight. Even though he made nearly 200
appearances last year, Redman works hard keep his playing
fresh.

"I clear everything out of my mind," he says, "and really try to
tap into my soul and allow it to have a connection with my
instrument."

CONCERT: Joshua Redman at the Wadsworth Theater, tonight at 8.
TIX: $27, $24, $9 for students. For more info call (310)
825-2101.
