University police are continuing an investigation of facilities
management, after an employee and a manager of a local tool shop
were both arrested in an alleged scheme involving the theft of
thousands of dollars worth of university tools.

Wal-Mart is the largest corporation in the world. It generates
hundreds of billions of dollars in sales each year and employs
millions of workers both at home and abroad.

Much of California’s agricultural workforce is
undocumented, a chronic problem for both unions and growers that
resulted in an unlikely bipartisan plan to legalize the
workforce.

A small handful of students are trying to create a new student
group focusing on farm workers, a population seemingly far away
from the urban noise, traffic and bustle of Los Angeles.

SONOMA “”mdash; Escaping the sweltering Sonoma County sun during
his 30-minute Friday lunch break, 60-year-old Domingo Garcia
stopped eating his meal of oranges, strawberries, a large cucumber
and burrito to explain why students should know about the recent
struggle between the United Farm Workers and E.&J.

On a scorching Friday afternoon, the UCLA Downtown Labor Center
seems bustling. There are meetings going on in different conference
rooms, members of a local union stream in and out, and the
directors and staff all seem to be working on different
projects.

After a 45-minute drive north through traffic on the 405 Freeway
along a labyrinth of other highways and roads winding away from
campus, about 12 undergraduates went to another class last
Wednesday ““ only this time they were the teachers.

University police will begin issuing $87 citations today for
drivers and passengers caught not buckling up during a period of
special police enforcement dubbed “Click it or
Ticket.”
“These next three weeks, we’re going to have
officers solely dedicated to actually looking for seat-belt
violators,” said Justin Mammen, who works in the UCPD
community services bureau.

SAN FRANCISCO “”mdash; The advertisement in The Daily Bruin
caught Zeb Tortorici’s eye in 1999 when he was in his fourth
year at UCLA studying history.

During demonstrations Thursday morning in front of UCLA Medical
Center laboratories and buildings, about 15 animal rights
protestors asked, “Hey UCLA, what do you say? How many
animals did you kill today?”
The demonstration was organized by University Students for the
Ethical Treatment of Animals who argue UCLA is wasting
taxpayers’ dollars on the inhumane and unethical treatment of
animals used in laboratory experiments.
