UC Riverside graduate student nominated for student regent-designate

A UC Riverside graduate student was nominated Tuesday for the 2015-2016 student regent-designate position on the University of California Board of Regents, the University’s governing body.
Marcela Ramirez, a graduate student in higher education administration and policy, serves as the graduate student representative on the UC Office of the President Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Advisory Committee. She previously served as a member of the Undocumented Student Task Force at UC Riverside.
Ramirez said in a statement announcing her nomination that she wants to focus on issues related to campus climate.
“I want to build a bridge of communication between students, staff, faculty and the board,” she said in the statement.
She said she wants to learn as much as she can while serving as the student regent-designate.
Ramirez said she wants to utilize her experience working in cultural centers and increase cultural sensitivity on campus so everyone’s identities can be respected.
Student regent-designates, unlike student regents, don’t have voting powers. Ramirez will serve a one-year term, after which she will serve as the student regent for the 2016-2017 school year. Avi Oved, a fourth-year economics student at UCLA, will serve as student regent for the 2015-2016 year.
The Board of Regents will vote to confirm her nomination at its July meeting on the UC San Francisco Mission Bay campus.
