A record number of students applied to the University of California for fall 2015, the University announced Thursday.

About 194,000 students applied to the UC, with about 158,000 of them applying as freshmen and the rest applying as transfer students. The total represents a 5.8 percent increase in the number of overall applications from last year.

About 148,000 freshmen and about 35,000 transfers applied to the UC for fall 2014.

Latinos made up the largest group of in-state students applying to the UC, while the numbers of black, Asian American and Pacific Islander applicants also grew.

More details about the applicant pool will be available in January, the University said.
