Submission: Prop. 45 a bureaucratic solution to a resolved issue

By Ryan Jones

Oct. 31, 2014 12:26 a.m.

Proposition 45 will give one politician in Sacramento the sole authority to regulate health care, including control over copays, deductibles and even coverage. This proposition creates more costly bureaucracy and unnecessary government oversight.

Proponents of the proposition argue that it will reduce costs to consumers, but instead it will drive up costs for insurance companies and premiums for consumers. For these reasons Bruin Republicans is firmly against Proposition 45.

Treatment decisions should be made by a doctor and patient, not by a politician with an agenda. This proposition would irresponsibly give sweeping new power to one elected official, with no safeguards for corruption. This would further put the California Legislature in the pockets of special interest groups and could lead to more charges of corruption in a time when nearly 15 percent of California Senate Democrats are charged with or convicted of crimes.

Sacramento Democrats have long wanted to control health care costs. This is why an independent commission exists to negotiate health care plans between doctors and patients, and reject them if they are too expensive. Bruin Republicans believes that Proposition 45 is a dangerous increase in government oversight and an extremely short-sighted fix to an issue that has already been resolved.

Jones is a fourth-year mathematics/economics student and the president of Bruin Republicans.
