Congressman, UCLA alum Henry Waxman to retire from House

Henry Waxman, who serves as the U.S. House of Representatives representative for the district that includes UCLA, announced Thursday he will retire after the current congressional session. The UCLA alumnus has held the office for more than four decades.
“After 40 years in Congress, it’s time for someone else to have the chance to make his or her mark,” Waxman said in a statement Thursday. “I have had a long career an an eventful one – and I wouldn’t trade any of it.”
Waxman, a Democrat, played a role in the passage of more than two dozen bills while in Congress, including the Drug Quality and Security Act, Clean Air Act and Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
As a congressman, Waxman has advocated for environmental protection, health, gay and women’s rights and a stronger tie between Israel and the U.S.
A successor to Waxman will be decided in Congress’ midterm elections in November of this year.
