Oct. 18, 2012 2:20 a.m.

The UCLA Graduate Students Association is the voice of graduate students on campus. The association meets for forum every three weeks and takes positions on current issues affecting graduate students. Forum meetings are at 5:30 p.m. in the Ackerman Viewpoint Lounge.

Agenda

  • Council representatives unanimously voted to create a committee to increase graduate councils’ involvement and advocacy in GSA Forum meetings.
  • The Codes of GSA will be updated to accurately list all programs within each council to ensure that each council receives the appropriate amount of funding.

Officer Reports

  • President David Zeke said he met with Glyn Davies, associate vice chancellor of academic planning and budget, about professional school tuition increases and contingency plans for Proposition 30, a tax measure on the November ballot that would temporarily increase the state sales tax by a quarter of a cent. He asked the council to push for their departments to have a contingency plan in place in case the measure fails to pass.
  • Vanessa Thulsiraj, vice president of internal affairs, said she will attend the first Student Activity Center Board of Governors meeting next week to give graduate student input for a proposed Unity Center on campus.
  • Nicole Robinson, vice president of academic affairs, said she is looking for graduate students to fill positions on the UCLA Academic Senate, chancellor’s advisory committees and campus policy committees. Robinson also said there have been changes to leave of absence, absentia and withdrawal policies for graduate students.
  • Dani Molina, vice president of external affairs, discussed his goals for the upcoming year and the upcoming Student Advocates for Graduate Education summit at the end of November.

Special Presentations

  • A graduate representative from the Tobacco-Free Task Force reminded the council of UC President Mark Yudof’s initiative to make all UC campuses smoke-free and said that UCLA plans to be the first campus to adopt this initiative next April.
