UCLA men’s tennis stops Cal Poly with its third sweep of the month

The late-season sweeps just keep coming in for the UCLA men’s tennis team.

The Bruins kept the Cal Poly Mustangs off of the scoreboard in a 7-0 non-conference win at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on Wednesday after shutting out Oregon and Arizona earlier this month.

After a Feb. 25 match against Stanford was canceled because of rain, coach Billy Martin was able to add Wednesday’s match to the schedule to help UCLA prepare for its showdown against USC on Friday, but he said the Bruins weren’t entirely focused on Wednesday’s match.

“I was worried about that, not taking (Cal Poly) seriously, and playing at their level a little bit, instead of wanting to play at the highest level possible to kind of get ready for ‘SC,” Martin said.

The Bruins’ only blemish on the day was the No. 2 doubles team’s loss. Senior Amit Inbar and sophomore Warren Hardie lost 9-8 to the Mustangs’ freshman Marco Comuzzo and sophomore Jordan Bridge in a match for which Inbar took responsibility.

“I think Warren played really solid and good; I don’t know what happened, I just blanked out (Wednesday),” Inbar said.

The No. 9 Bruins (16-5, 3-2 Pac-10) won the other two doubles matches and took the doubles point into singles play, where UCLA made quick work of Cal Poly.

On court No. 6, senior Holden Seguso beat Cal Poly junior Sebastian Bell 6-2, 6-1 to register the Bruins’ second point of the match. His teammates followed his lead, winning all of their matches in straight sets to ensure the quick victory.

“Everybody took charge right from the start,” Martin said of his team’s play in singles. “There really wasn’t any, what I would say, close matches, so that was very good.”

The win was UCLA’s fifth straight and third sweep in four matches, and it kept momentum on its side after not playing since an April 11 win over Pepperdine.

“It gives all of us confidence and we’re in rhythm,” freshman Daniel Kosakowski said. “We had a week off after Pepperdine, so it was good to play this match … and we’ll be ready to play Friday.”
