UCLA women’s water polo trumps LMU. 12-9, in the final of the Triton Invitational

No. 3 UCLA goes 4-0 at Triton Invitational after defeating the Lions and San Diego State

It wasn’t exactly vengeance for the UCLA women’s water polo team, but its win over Loyola Marymount in the final of the Triton Invitational served as a reminder that this team is no longer taking opponents lightly.

The 12-9 UCLA win marked the first time the two teams had matched up since the Lions stunned the Bruins in the first round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament, ending UCLA’s consecutive run of championships at five.

No. 6 LMU still proved to be a difficult out in the rematch and went tit-for-tat with No. 3 UCLA (12-1) throughout the game. The two teams were tied at six going into the half before the Bruins opened a two-goal lead in the third quarter, one they wouldn’t give up.

Sophomore attacker Brooke Martin notched a hat-trick and senior attacker Priscilla Orozco had a pair of goals of her own to lead eight UCLA scorers.

The win over the Lions (7-2) ended a successful weekend for the Bruins, who went 4-0 at the invitational after two blowout wins on Saturday and a slim one-goal win over No. 9 San Diego State (8-2) in the semifinals on Sunday.

The weekend-sweep momentum will be valuable as UCLA moves forward into Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play. The Bruins’ next match is a conference game Saturday at home against UC Irvine.
