Decade in Review: Punk

By Katie Meschke

Dec. 3, 2009 12:21 a.m.

For those who spent the last decade dealing with teen angst and being mad at their parents, these albums provided some serious catharsis. Slamming drums, electric guitar screams and angry wails gave a voice to all those looking to stick it to the man in the post-’90s grunge scene. Some of these albums inspired leagues of teenagers to rebel against ignorance (Green Day’s “American Idiot”). Others inspired getting rid of an ex-best friend the hard way (“Be Your Own Pet”). Whether the albums were reminiscent of glam rock and guyliner or garage band stars, all of them fought authority on political or musical levels. But hey, controversy and angry shankers are what punk is all about, right?
