Two UCLA students stabbed at party

Sept. 28, 2009 9:33 p.m.

Two UCLA students were stabbed after a fight broke out at a party held on the night of Sept. 21 on the 600 block of Midvale Avenue, university police said.

Four men between the ages of 19 and 22, none of whom are UCLA students, have been charged with counts of attempted murder and mayhem in connection with the fight, according to UCPD Capt. John Adams.

One of the victims was stabbed in the abdomen, and the second was stabbed in the arm, Adams said. A third victim, also a UCLA student, was injured when he was hit over the head with a bottle.

The victims were treated for injuries at a local hospital. Two have been released, and the third is in stable condition and is expected to recover. None of the victims has been charged with any crimes.

UCPD is working with local law enforcement agencies to determine the timeline of events that led up to the fight.

Adams declined to comment on whether the fight was gang-related, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.

He said additional information will be released in the next few days.

From what has been determined so far, Adams said police initially responded to reports of a stabbing that had occurred on the 600 block of Midvale Avenue.

A party had been held just before by Lambda Phi Epsilon, and witnesses testified that alcohol was served at the event, Adams said.

He declined to comment on whether the suspects or victims had been drinking alcohol before the fight broke out.

Police followed leads that led them to arrest one man on a pedestrian stop near the Canyon Point residential hall and three men at the De Neve parking structure.

UCPD did not release a crime alert to notify students of the incident because “we already had the suspects in custody,” Adams said. Under law, crimes must be publicized when there is an ongoing threat to the campus community, he added, explaining why no alert was released.
