W. soccer triumphs over Titans

UCLA’s leading scorer is Traci Arkenberg.

Of UCLA’s four game-winning goals, Arkenberg has her name next
to all of them.

So what happens in the women’s soccer match Wednesday night
versus Cal State Fullerton at Spaulding Field?

Sherice Bartling scores the winning goal with six minutes
remaining in the game, leading the Bruins to a 1-0 victory over the
gutty Titans.

"Traci fed me a nice ball, and I was kind of off-balance, but I
just lofted it up with my left foot," said Bartling. "Luckily it
went in the back post."

UCLA controlled the ball for much of the game, in a game filled
with defensive gems and balls hitting the post.

Early in the second half, Arkenberg stole the ball from
Fullerton goalkeeper Suzy Strazzulla as she attempted to clear the
ball, but Strazzulla made the save with Arkenberg at point-blank
range.

Later in the second half, Arkenberg nearly gave the Bruins the
lead with a shot that bounced off the left post.

But for the first time this season, UCLA didn’t need Arkenberg’s
heroics to win the game.

"Sherice [Bartling] stepped up, took the shot when she needed
it, and put one in," said Arkenberg. "Sherice did a great job."

With the win, the Bruins extend their unbeaten streak to five,
going 4-0-1 and allowing only a single goal during that
stretch.

"We’ve changed our defensive style of how we’re playing, and I
think that’s helped a lot with the organization back there," said
UCLA defender Tiffany Brown. "It’s a lot easier to follow your man
and the ball in order to get it out."
