Josh Geffon, a second-year political-science student, has been
elected as president of the Jewish Student Union.

In the upcoming year, Geffon said he hopes to restructure the
organization and provide programs that increase interaction with
the UCLA student body.

"What we would like to do is provide programming for (both)
unaffiliated Jews and those that are affiliated," Geffon said. "We
would like to decrease the polarization on-campus of the Jewish
community."

According to Geffon, this polarization stems from a lack of
interaction among various Jewish organizations and the fact that
groups see other organizations in a negative light.

To accomplish these goals, Geffon and the Jewish Student Union
board hope to include students in plans for restructuring the
organization.

In expressing his enthusiasm for the restructuring, Geffon
welcomed any interested students to come and help the group.

"It would be really great if anyone (who) is interested got in
touch with us," Geffon added. "We’re out there to make a difference
for students, both Jewish and the entire UCLA community."

Furthermore, Geffon hopes to provide more activities such as a
student welcoming program, which would include a barbecue or
bonfire at the beach.

"We’re creating an image to show that the Jewish Student Union
is a viable organization (and) that we’re run by students for
students," Geffon said.

In the political arena, Geffon also related his desire to get
the campus Jewish community more involved with the undergraduate
students government (USAC).

"(We are) very apathetic in USAC politics," Geffon said. "A lot
of Jews on-campus don’t understand the significance of what the
undergraduate council provides and how it affects people’s
lives."
