Cal State L.A., Dominguez Hills provide little threatBy Brian

This should be the easiest weekend of the year for the
20th-ranked UCLA baseball team, as it takes a respite from its
Six-Pac schedule to play Division II Cal State Los Angeles and Cal
State Dominguez Hills.

Cal State L.A. (26-26 overall) visits Jackie Robinson Stadium
today at 3 p.m. and will face right-hander Kevin Sheredy, who is
making the first start of his UCLA career. Sheredy, normally the
team’s closer, posts a 2-1 record to go along with eight saves.

Bruin starting pitching has been inconsistent with the exception
of Jim Parque and Pete Zamora, and starting Sheredy is the latest
attempt at a solution.

"We decided to take a look at him as a starter," UCLA coach
Vince Beringhele said. "We think he has the endurance to possibly
make the transition from the bullpen."

It will be a relatively easy debut start for Sheredy, as he will
be facing a school that hasn’t enjoyed a winning season since 1977,
and is 8-29 against UCLA (30-20 overall) during Gary Adams’
regime.

Dominguez Hills comes in for a 1 p.m. Saturday game, and it
doesn’t bring much better credentials than Cal State L.A.

Sure, they’re ranked 15th in Division II, but they are just
30-20 overall, playing in the same conference as Cal State L.A. The
Toros visited Jackie Robinson on April 23 and they were dispatched,
13-6.

This time the Toros will have to face UCLA ace Jim Parque (8-1),
who was recently invited to try out for the U.S. Olympic Team.
Parque is one of 40 players attempting to fill 25 spots on the
squad that will go to Atlanta.

Parque would usually not start against a team such as Dominguez
Hills, but throwing on Saturday will keep him on his usual schedule
and prepare him for next weekend’s series against USC. The
three-game set against the Trojans is the last Six-Pac series of
the year for UCLA, and will determine whether it or Stanford
finishes in second place.
