NAIA school out of its league in baseball’s 16-3 blowoutBy Yoni

This one was over from the word "go."

Consider this: UCLA rightfielder Eric Byrnes went two-for-two
with three RBIs in the first inning alone.

Such was the trend Tuesday evening at Jackie Robinson Stadium,
when UCLA recorded a 16-3 victory over Westmont College, a team
that evidently did not know when to say "mercy."

"[Westmont] played hard for nine innings," UCLA batting coach
Vince Beringhele said. "It’s easy to let up when you get a big lead
like that, and our players did a good job of staying in the game
and playing the game of baseball the way it was meant to be
played."

The lopsided affair was UCLA’s first Tuesday win of the season
as the Bruins matched their season-high for runs scored. Then
again, what else can one expect from NAIA-member Westmont (18-16),
which has now been outscored 72-11 by its five NCAA opponents this
season?

Everyone got into the action Tuesday as the Bruins emptied the
bench. Second baseman Chad Matoian broke out of a 1-for-30 slump
with three hits and three RBIs. Mike Jamarillo doubled in his first
collegiate at-bat, and freshman Allen Jerkens made his collegiate
debut, pitching two shutout innings.

Looking remarkably poised considering the situation, Jerkens
allowed no hits, retiring six out of the eight batters he
faced.

Eric Valent, Nick Theodorou, and Byrnes each homered in the
game, while Jake Meyer (1-1) picked up the win for the Bruins.

On Tuesday the Pac-10 suspended UCLA head coach Gary Adams for
UCLA’s next four regularly scheduled games, not including Westmont
nor today’s first game of a home double header against Cal
State-Dominguez Hills (28-14) at 3:00 p.m., and Loyola Marymount
(19-31) at 7:00 p.m.

The decision comes on the heels of Adams’ announcement Monday
that he planned to sit out the team’s next four games in protest of
the NCAA’s inequitable punishment for coaches who intentionally
throw at players. Both he and Pete Zamora missed Tuesday night’s
game, and will remain suspended through this weekend’s series
against Stanford.
